Men’s and women’s lacrosse traveled to North Carolina to face two ranked opponents, while Peter Walsdorf set a school record this week in SU sports.

Women’s lax on a roll

No. 4 Syracuse women’s lacrosse defeated No. 17 Duke 10-9 on Saturday afternoon to extend its win streak to 11 games.

Emma Muchnick, Molly Guzik and Ashlee Volpe each backed the offense with hat tricks.

With 5:20 left in the game, the Blue Devils and the Orange were tied 9-9. Muchnick scored the final goal of the day with three minutes left in regulation. The Blue Devils made a late push to tie it in the closing seconds, but goalie Daniella Guyette shut it down.

The Orange return home to take on No. 14 Notre Dame on Saturday at noon.

UNC ends men’s lax winning streak

Just down the road from Durham, the men’s lacrosse team faced the UNC Tar Heels, but the outcome was a bit different than the women’s.

No. 2 UNC beat the No. 3 Orange 14-9, ending the team’s six-game winning streak.

Michael Leo led Syracuse with three goals and two assists.

The Orange take on Virginia on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the JMA Wireless Dome.

New school record set in 10k

Senior Peter Walsdorf crossed the finish line in 28:14.58 during the 10k at the Stanford Invitational on Friday, setting a new school record and PR.

At the Red Dragon Invitational, the Orange won eight of the 10 events they ran in.

Wide receiver injured in practice

Freshman wide receiver Calvin Russell III suffered a non-contact Achilles’ tear while running in spring practice on Monday. He underwent surgery on Wednesday.

Head coach Fran Brown said the earliest Russell could return to the field is late October, according to syracuse.com.

Russell came to Syracuse in January and joined the men’s basketball team. He scored three points in the Orange’s 88-68 loss to NC State on Jan. 27.
