Emo fans unite at Beak & Skiff for Hot Mulligan
Review: Koyo, Saturdays at Your Place and Joyce Manor join for a night of energetic music and constant crowd surfing.
Hot Mulligan and a cadre of fellow emo acts transformed LaFayette’s peaceful apple orchard into a four-hour grungy show on Friday that had a chaotic vibe from start to finish.
Several thousand fans entered the grounds decked head-to-toe in midwest emo fashion. From handmade cropped tees to weathered boots and cargo shorts, the crowd found their place on the lawn, anticipating the four acts to come.
First up onstage was Koyo, a punk band from Stony Brook, New York, jumping out on stage, amping up the crowd. Coming from the Long Island college town, lead singer Joey Chiaramonte gave a shout-out to college towns like Syracuse.
Koyo played songs including “Irreversable,” “You’re on the List” and “Happens to the Best of Us” with vigor. The vocals and sound from the group helped keep fans energetic for the next act.
The Michigan midwest emo band, Saturdays at Your Place, performed “In the Future” and “I’d rather be in Michigan.” They also played “what am I supposed to do?” which introduced a more peppy, indie sound to the band’s discography.
Joyce Manor followed with tracks from their new album I Used To Go To This Bar. They took to the stage with songs including “The Opossum” and “Well, Whatever It Was.”
Energy at Beak & Skiff rose to a new high as fans started lifting each other into a crowd surf. Throughought, lead vocalist Barry Johnson sang with a nasally and raspy sound, providing elements of dissonance to help convey the often bitter lyrics.
Joyce Manor closed out with popular songs“Constant Headache” and “Catalina Fight Song.” Though the latter lasted less than two minutes, fans managed to get one last crowd surfer up in the air.
The fourth and final act of the night, Hot Mulligan, barreled out on stage. They were greeted by roaring fans who had once again taken to lifting crowd surfers up before the music started.
The band gave fans a night of high energy music and quippy banter from the long haired lead singer between songs.
With tracks “Shhhh! Golf is On,” *Equip Sunglasses*” and “BCKYRD,” fans couldn’t contain their excitement from the unique guitar riffs and bass heavy drums, ending the night with endless crowd surfers, nearly five at a time.
