Lake Street Dive delivers soul, jazz and poppy good times

Lake Street Dive once again turned a LaFayette apple orchard into a dance floor Wednesday with its genre-blending mix of pop, soul and jazz.

The stop marked the fifth time Lake Street Dive has taken the stage at Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards since 2019, drawing a few thousand central New York faithful who were more than happy to be dancing and singing along outside on a comfortable summer evening.

The Boston-formed quintet — known for Rachael Price’s powerhouse vocals, Bridget Kearney’s upright bass work and a sound that draws as much from classic Motown as indie rock — performed a set of fan favorites and newer songs.

Wednesday’s concert included Lake Street Dive staples such as “Bad Self Portraits,” “Better Than” and “Hypotheticals,” alongside “Dance With a Stranger” from 2024’s “Good Together,” the recent single “You’re Never Around” and the as-yet-unreleased “Vegas Mattress.”

Mixed into the setlist was the one-two punch of the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” and the Cranberries’ “Linger,” plus a cover of Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One” led by keyboardist Akie Bermiss.

Seattle’s The Dip warmed up the Beak & Skiff crowd, opening with the horn-fueled, retro-soul sound that has made the seven-piece band a rising name on the summer tour circuit.
