The Clerk’s House’s traditional home exterior reflects its 100-year history.

Hidden just off Fay Road in Onondaga Hill, The Clerk’s House is a Syracuse gem and the perfect bakery for your autumn cravings. The café opened in January 2026 and is owned by Dan and Theresa Seeley, the same couple behind The Cider Mill restaurant next door. Disguised as a traditional home, the bakery serves everything from a seasonal “Poison Apple Matcha” to homemade squash and red onion focaccia. Step inside the restored 100-year-old cottage, and you’ll be itching for a pastry and your favorite episode of Gilmore Girls.

The antique fireplace and leather-cushioned armchairs make ordering “to-go” seem foolish. Wooden tables and chairs with striped cushions seat only a couple dozen. Some customers are deep in conversation while others focus on their laptops, but nearly all of them are continuously sipping their iced lattes.

No one slips through the door without a warm welcome from the staff behind the counter. While you order, expect a smile and a recommendation for the apple crumb bun. Take the suggestion. The buttery bun, filled with cinnamon apples and topped with a sweet glaze, is the perfect treat to share.

It’s no surprise the cottage dates back to the early 1900s; its charm is written into every detail. The Seeley family, who once lived in The Clerk’s House, kept the space feeling like a home, with dainty light fixtures, mirrors and artwork that could pass for family heirlooms.

Ask for water, and you’ll be pointed to a gold and silver dispenser where you can fill a glass cup. Sandwiches and pastries arrive on floral-patterned plates that look like they came straight from your grandmother’s china cabinet.

Don’t let the vintage setting fool you: the menu puts a modern twist on the classics. The coffee and matcha flavor options feel nearly limitless, from apple butter syrup to peanut butter cold foam, and the staff encourages creativity, patiently helping customers customize their drinks.

Lily Gerstein, a first-time customer, called her iced matcha latte with almond milk and vanilla “absolutely delicious” and said “The Roman” wrap was one of the best she’s had in Syracuse. Nikki Heiberger, another first-timer, took on “The Calabrian,” a mortadella and salami sandwich on homemade focaccia. The sandwich was nearly as big as her head, and she barely made a dent, but she still rated it a 10 out of 10.

Make time for the seasonal specials, especially the pumpkin cheesecake latte, which had a group of girls gathered around a table just to taste it.

A commitment to quality ingredients and the staff’s careful attention to each order have earned The Clerk’s House a loyal following. About 30 minutes before closing, one man hurried through the door. “I left work an hour early because I heard I just had to try your coffee,” he said.

He had the right idea. Cozy, charming and full of fall flavor, The Clerk’s House is worth leaving work early for.
