Who did it at Schine Underground? University Union puts on ‘Knives Out’ screening
UU hosts ‘Knives Out’ murder mystery movie night at Schine
On Saturday night, University Union hosted a showing of the mystery film for students to come and enjoy. There was a plethora of free food, drinks and good vibes.
As Halloween draws near, it was only fitting that University Union chose murder mystery “Knives Out,” for their screening Saturday night.
It’s the second movie screening that UU has put on, and they pulled out all the stops to make it a great experience for attendees. Once the crowd started to make their way into Schine Underground, they were greeted with a table full of free merchandise to grab whatever they pleased. After moviegoers quickly claimed their seats, they were able to check out the food and drinks table.
Hang-Yu Chen, a third-year at Syracuse University, has been to numerous UU events for the great atmosphere. “I went to the movie screening last year and have been to the one’s on the quad. I like how chill it is and the free food.”
The snack collection was the hotspot before the movie began. From a variety of soft drinks, coffee, cookies and of course popcorn, there was every option you could want for a movie night.
With the film beginning just after 7 p.m., the crowd started to fill in as the lights went dim.
Released in 2019, “Knives Out” is a classic whodunit film directed by Rian Johnson that dives into the strange death of Harlan Thrombey played by Christopher Plummer resulting in private detective Benoit Blanc played by Daniel Craig being anonymously hired to investigate. Craig has been the star of all three “Knives Out” films, and all of which have quickly become classics.
Syracuse first-year, Bella Lamotta, saw the event as an opportunity to go see the film again. “This is a great event to meet people and to go see a movie that I really love.”
This film performed exceptionally well commercially and critically, leading to two other “Knives Out” films being released since. In 2022, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” was released and featured Blanc traveling to a Greek Island for a game that turned into a crime scene. Following another strong reception, a third film was released in 2025 called, “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery”. After all three films have done so well critically, it makes sense as to why the crowd was on the edge of their seats until the end of the movie.
While “Knives Out” was the main attraction, like all UU events, there were things to do beyond the movie. Before the film started, there were lots of students playing chess and other games to get their brains warmed up to solve the mystery.
Students gathered in Schine Underground for UU’s screening of “Knives Out”, complete with food and drinks. These gatherings offer the SU community a fun, free evening to unwind after a long week of study.
