Unidentified law enforcement on campus Monday morning is not ICE, according to DPS
The officers were spotted entering the Shaffer Art Building.
Despite widespread rumors online Monday, the law enforcement officers on Syracuse University’s campus on Monday morning were not U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, according to the Syracuse University Department of Public Safety.
“There is no ICE. We can confirm there is no ICE on campus as of right now,” a DPS officer told The NewsHouse at approximately 11:30 a.m.
When initially reached, DPS confirmed to The NewsHouse that there was “a law enforcement agency” on campus this morning, but declined to identify it, saying it was not federal.
“There is a law enforcement agency that was on campus, but it was not federal,” the officer said.
When reached minutes later to DPS said they were unable to confirm any information about the officers, including whether or not they were part of a federal investigation.
The agents were U.S. Marshals, a spokesperson later confirmed.
Word spread quickly about potential ICE agents on campus on the popular anonymous social networking app YikYak, with posts reading “Ice is in Schafer the art building everyone be in the lookout and stay safe.” On Facebook, a member of the Syracuse University Parents Class of 2026 group posted, “Apparently ICE is on campus.”
The building in question, the Shaffer Art Building, is adjacent to the College Place bus stop.
