Boston College upsets No. 13 Syracuse
The Orange were snubbed of victory in their regular season finale.
The No. 14 Syracuse Orange field hockey team suffered a 3-1 defeat in the last game of its regular season play before heading to the ACC Tournament. Difficulties on defense and lack of offensive momentum became the downfall for the Orange against Boston College.
Within the first few minutes of play, the Orange fell to an 1-0 deficit after a goal from midfielder Laila Rosenquest, her fourth goal of the year.
At the end of the first quarter, the Orange’s defense prevented four shots but produced no offensive push.
Entering the second quarter, the Syracuse defense continued to shut down any advances into their defensive circle.
In the final nine minutes, the Orange’s offense gained some momentum and made several scoring attempts against the Eagles.
The final shot of the quarter just barely missed the net and went wide.
Before entering the second half, coach Lynn Farquhar knew there needed to be adjustments made when it came to ball movement.
“It [ball movement] completely changes how a team can press you,” she said.
Boston College extended their lead in the third quarter with a goal by forward Klara Mueffelmann.
By the end of third, Boston College maintained their offensive control with 8 shots. While their defense kept the Orange at bay with only three shots.
Entering the fourth quarter with a 2-0 lead, the Eagles extended their advantage when Caroline Chisholm scored off an assist from Lily Pergola.
Preventing a devastating shutout Syracuse’s sophomore forward Fieve Frenken responded making the final score 3-1.
Her goal was not only the Orange’s first goal of the game, but her first career goal with the team.
When the final whistle blew, Syracuse was not able to overcome the Eagles’ defense, falling in defeat.
But the Orange must now turn their attention to the ACC Tournament, using this loss to address what went wrong and prepare for what is up ahead.
“[The team needs] to move the ball at high speed,” said Coach Farquhar.
Marking the end of regular season play, Syracuse travels to Chapel Hill, North Carolina for the ACC Tournament starting on Nov. 3.
