SU defeats RPI in non-conference match at Tennity Ice Pavilion
The Orange led in shots the whole game to secure the 3-1 victory.
It started early for Syracuse women’s ice hockey, not even five minutes into the matchup; Stella Costabile continued to stay red hot, netting the game’s first goal on a great centering feed from her linemate Jackson Kinsler.
This marked the third goal Costabile has scored in her last four games, also marking a four-game point streak for the sophomore.
At the end of the first period Syracuse led in shots 13-10, but RPI was not too far behind, as shortly into the second period Syracuse saw a power play opportunity, but RPI’s Georgia Bailey took matters into her own hands by breaking free in a alone and putting the shot past netminder Ava Drabyk tying it up 1-1 with a shorthanded goal.
By the end of the 2nd period, Syracuse once again led in shots, 28-15, and had the power play opportunity, but RPI was making life hard for the Orange.
Shortly into the final period of play, Captain Nea Tervonen received a pass from Kinsler right in the center of the slot, backhanding it right past the netminder Reese Keating, putting the Orange up 2-1.
RPI saw two more looks on the power play, but ultimately it was not enough, as Charlotte Hallett buried home the empty netter from center ice, extending her point streak to three games.
The team currently sits with a 7-10-2 record after finding their first home regulation win of the season with their 3-1 victory over RPI, as this was the final game of the Orange’s four-game homestand, as they took on Mercyhurst in a weekend series, followed by their matchup with No. 5 Cornell.
After the team travels on the road to finish the weekend series with RPI, they will find themselves back at Tennity to take on Lindenwood in a conference matchup over the weekend to finish their first semester play.
