Lizzy McAlpine performs at The Fillmore Philadelphia for her hometown show.

For when your headphones are on and you have nowhere to be for the next 20 minutes.

1. “Metal Through Her Lips” – Oscar Lindsey (2026)

The kind of song you wish you wrote yourself. The first verse sings “she puts metal through her lips like a fish that got caught by a fisherman.” Genius. Next.

2. “The Moon” – Lizzy McAlpine (2026)

Soft, simple and sad. This is the song for staring out the window at night and overanalyzing every lyric and aspect of your life.

3. “Excalibur” – Good Morning (2024)

You know that one sweatshirt you keep reaching for every fall? This song is the musical equivalent. It’s easygoing, warm and familiar enough to leave on repeat.

The song titles speak for themselves – completely devastating. The kind of songs you can listen to and stare off into space.

4. “Viciously Lonely” – The Backseat Lovers (2022)

I mean, Viciously Lonely? They really did all the work for us. Put this on when you’re in the mood to make a minor inconvenience feel like the end of the world.

5. “Kill Me” – Phoebe Bridgers (2026)

It’s Phoebe Bridgers. There’s really no need for further explanation. If you’re looking for a song that makes being sad feel almost aesthetic, start here.

6. “From the Dining Table” – Harry Styles (2017)

One of those songs that gets better when the weather gets worse. It’s quiet, lonely and somehow feels even more dramatic when it’s dark outside before 6 p.m.

Light a candle and need some background music?

7. “Halloween” – Phoebe Bridgers (2020)

A fall playlist without this song feels incomplete. It has that eerie, quiet feeling that makes October feel like October. Bridger’s haunting vocals scream halloween.

8. “Blue Light” – Mazzy Star (1993)

This song is older than most of the people making fall playlists right now, and somehow it still sounds exactly right. Dim room, rainy window, phone on Do Not Disturb.

9. “Jameson” – Lake Street Dive (2018)

A little warmer and more soulful than the rest of the section. It keeps the playlist from becoming too moody while still fitting perfectly into the fall rotation.

The songs you’ll pretend you found first.

10. “Jet Lag Mouth” – In Color (2026)

Here’s your chance to say you were listening before everyone else caught on. It’s new, catchy and deserves a spot before your algorithm inevitably finds it for you.

11. “Canopy” – Winyah (2026)

Another newer release for the people who are already bored of their fall rotation. Add it now, claim you found it first later. It’s the kind of song that turns your playlist into an indie movie.

12. “Better Late Than Never” – almost monday (2026)

The playlist needs a little serotonin boost. This one brings some brightness so you end the playlist with no tears.
