‘One Piece: Into the Grand Line’ brings viewers the next chapters
Commentary: After its greatly successful debut season, the Straw Hats return in Netflix’s live action adaptation for a second season with even greater scale than the first. Here’s everything to get excited about the March 10 release.
The much-awaited One Piece: Into the Grand Line brings viewers the next chapters in the beloved pirate story.
Netflix’s live-action One Piece had groundbreaking global success for an adaptation of a Japanese manga. The first season had more than 280 million hours of views in just two weeks on the platform. Following the show’s initial success, the studio immediately green lit the second season, which comes to streaming on March 10.
A globally recognized giant of Japanese media history, with more than 1,100 manga chapters released, Eiichiro Oda’s masterpiece transcends borders. This proved true with the widespread positive reception of season one.
Traditionally, live action adaptations have flopped in America. However, the close partnership with Oda combined with key casting decisions honored the characters of One Piece he’d created. This balance and creative detail led to unprecedented support from longtime series fans, something sure to continue in the upcoming season.
Before diving back into the world of One Piece, here are some things to get excited about coming in the new season.
More than 30 new characters are entering the story
One of the reasons season one stood out to longtime fans was the care and authenticity in castings, something that will be continuing in season two. The cast is led by Iñaki Godoy, the Mexican actor praised for bringing the authentic joy and whimsy of Monkey D. Luffy to the screen.
Charithra Chandran, known for her recent role as Edwina Sharma in Bridgerton, was handpicked by Oda to play Nefertari Vivi. This character will no doubt be important, as the original manga focuses heavily on Vivi in this section of the story.
Her opposition comes from Joe Manganiello’s heavily anticipated rendition of Mr. 0, the leader of Baroque Works. As head of the criminal syndicate, he stands in the way of the Straw Hats. All while funding assassins, criminals and pirates throughout the Grand Line.
Standing beside him will be Lera Abova as Miss All-Sunday. She is a mysterious figure of supreme importance to the greater world of One Piece.
Tony Tony Chopper is perhaps the most exciting new addition. The reindeer-like beloved character will be brought to life through CGI and motion capture technology. Mikaela Hoover will both voice and perform to bring the emotional depth to many of Chopper’s scenes. At a Netflix launch event in late 2025, co-showrunner Joe Tracz outlined how much emphasis the crew is putting on introducing Chopper.
Filling out the exciting additions are Callum Kerr as Smoker, the rough and tumble navy man committed to bringing the Straw Hats to justice. Alongside him is Katey Sagal as the iconic Dr. Kureha.
Introduction to the larger world
One Piece: Into the Grand Line will introduce us to the strange, wonderful and dangerous new ocean the crew will be sailing. The mysterious strip of sea will house unique islands that up the stakes for Luffy and his crew.
In the new episodes audiences will join the crew as they travel from the cactus domes of Whiskey Peak. Their voyages will take them to see the dinosaurs and giants of Little Garden and winter wilderness of Drum Island.
The second season was filmed entirely in Cape Town, where set designers worked hard to bring the islands to life. According to producers, crews brought in truckloads of fake snow to cover hillsides, helping actors fully immerse themselves in their roles.
Glimpses of the darker undertones are expected to peak through as the One Piece world is further explored. These themes will build into the true essence of Oda’s work. It is a tale of the few fighting against oppression to create a better tomorrow for all.
According to rumors, the season two total runtime is 481 minutes. This puts it half an hour longer than the previous season’s runtime, with all eight episodes releasing together. For the most diehard of fans, the first two episodes are getting theatrical screenings across more than 200 theaters in the U.S., Canada and Japan.
