‘Girl dinner’ gets an upgrade at Syracuse restaurant The Wedge
This Eastwood restaurant puts a spin on comfort food with its popular ‘girl dinner,’ specialty cheese boards and customizable martinis in an eclectic setting.
Chicken cutlets, Caesar salad and french fries: name a better trio. At The Wedge in Syracuse’s Eastwood neighborhood, this combination has earned its own spot on the menu under the fitting name of “girl dinner.”
Located at 2802 James St., The Wedge offers a creative take on comfort food in a setting just as unique as its menu.
The restaurant has an eclectic atmosphere, with mismatched china plates and colorful glassware that give each table a different look. Vintage artwork covers the walls, and fresh flowers and warm lighting make the space feel inviting. It’s the kind of place that works just as well for a date night as it does for dinner with friends.
The main attraction, however, is the food. On Thursday nights, customers can order the “girl dinner” special, featuring a crispy chicken cutlet, Caesar salad and french fries. Diners can also upgrade to truffle fries for an additional charge. The meal brings together familiar, satisfying favorites with options for an elevated twist.
During my visit around 8:30 p.m., the waitress mentioned that the kitchen had just one “girl dinner” remaining, and I was lucky enough to order the last one. The portion was generous and the meal lived up to expectations. It’s not necessarily a dish you’d expect to stand out on a restaurant menu, but that’s part of its appeal. If you crave a good Caesar salad or chicken cutlet, it’s hard to find much to complain about.
At $28, however, the dish is on the pricier side for the average college student, especially with the additional cost of a drink or appetizer. Still, it’s worth considering for an occasional night out.
The rotating shareable cheese board is another highlight. Each cheese comes with a specific accompaniment, such as apple slices or jam, chosen to complement its flavor. Our waitress took the time to explain each pairing, making it an engaging experience. Customers can even purchase their favorite cheeses from The Curd Nerd, the specialty cheese shop next door.
The Wedge also offers a build-your-own martini experience, allowing guests to choose their preferred vodka or gin and customize the drink with savory brine additions. Our waitress was especially helpful in guiding us through the options, making the process approachable for someone unfamiliar with martinis. On Thursdays, the restaurant offers $2 off martinis for “girl dinner” night.
For Syracuse students looking to try somewhere beyond their usual dining spots, The Wedge offers a fun change of pace. The food is familiar enough to please a picky eater, but the restaurant’s atmosphere and creative menu make the experience feel special.
Take it from someone who snagged the last one: “girl dinner” is worth arriving early for.
